Do you find the Smashwords process of prepping an e-Book to be pretty easy? I’m thinking of putting some stuff out there in e-format(s), and I’m curious.

It’s a little bit of a pain at first. You have to make sure your document is formatted just right (they have an extensive style guide that is pretty hefty, but don’t let it intimidate you… I found I just jumped to the parts I needed to know). Once you do the first one or two, you’ll be used to it and everything after is a cinch. Also, I used the Smashwords formatted docs and slipped them into the Kindle publisher with no problems.
A couple of tips I gathered from formatting for Smashwords:
1. Use Times New Roman font, size 12 for your doc.
2. Set your paragraph spacing to be 1.15 (double-spacing looks like too much space on an eReader).
3. In Word (assuming you’re using Word), set the paragraph style to use a special indent of 0.3″ for the first line of a paragraph. You don’t want to use “regular” indents.
4. Turn on the paragraph marker icon to see a marker for every space and carriage return in your document.
